Dear Sir or Madam , I have long loved The Night Land , and other works of literature , of Mr.W.H.Hodgson . I frequently refer these books generally known but to the cognocenti to others in the hopes that they too shall know the sublime and superlative of fantastic literature . The very best ofhealth and happiness to all . . . and be sure to bolt the doors ! L/S :0) & =^..^= x two !!
I have long admired and enjoyed , across the years , The Nightland ; the book has never lost it's fascination for me . . . superb and sublime .
I bought my first volume of "The Nightland" over 25 years ago and loved it. Ordered a hardback copy only to recieve a large soft bound version which fell apart as I read it. As a lifelong reader of many venues..I can say without any doubt that it is a great work.
I drop by your site occasionally and am always so pleased to see it's thriving. There are so many "dead" pages dedicated to fantastic fiction, and you're so dedicated and interested in the subject that it makes me glad to think you're keeping up this terrific, very interesting, and very user-friendly site.
I have always been fascinated by this author and his life. Last year I visited the (private) house in North Wales where he wrote House on the Borderland and the local war memorial where he is listed on the stone (wrongly as the RFC).
Just finished Across the Night Wall and loved it. I saw your note about a new story from Wright and I cant wait! Wright is one of my favorite authors both for the three NL stories of his I have seen as well as the work of genius that is his Golden Age trilogy. I hope you keep this site up and keep the content coming. Thanks for what is probably in some ways thankless work. -d
wonderful, just wonderful. Night Land is just about my favourite book, and the art on this site does it justice. Thank you so for your fine efforts
I FIND HIS WRITINGS INTRIGUING, AND YET AT THE SAME TIME DISTURBING IN A VERY UNSETTLING WAY. HE SEEMS TO BE PREOCCUPIED WITH SWINE, DOES HE NOT. ALL TOLD AN EXCELLENT WRITER OF CHILLING STORIES FOR LATE AT NIGHT.
The link to part three of Night Cry, at the end of part 2, does not work. http://www.thenightland.co.uk/nightcry2.html
Thank heavens, new story!!! Cant wait to see the last part of JC Wrights storey!
I first read Nightland back in 1974 and it has stayed with me since then. I have read it twice more, together with all WHH's novels that I could find. Is everyone aware that Night Shade Books have published four volumes of WHH's work, with a fifth to be published in March. You can find them on Amazon.com. Well produced, nice bindings, GREAT VALUE and priceless if you are a WHH fane, which I guess we all are
Thank you, friends and fellow Night Land fans, for your wonderful site. The "Eternal Love" in the title of your first collection of stories (which I'm presently reading) is actually your (and our shared) love for Hodgson's world, for the Redoubts and their peoples. I hope some day I'll be able to contribute somehow, maybe with some short essay. In the meanwhile, I'm just reading your texts, voraciously. Cheers, Simone Dalla Chiesa The University of Milano, Italy
hodgson's imagination was innovative. he leads you thru realms of fantasy that even today would make for a great speilberg movie. I'm surprised he isn't more well known.
brilliant site! Good to see that new life is being breathed back into this classic.
More John C. Wright...more of everything actually. This is really great content and for some reason the setting really intrigues and resonates!
I'm greatly pleased to find a reference to this marvelous book that I read many years ago but yet remember well
exellent work
(An entry was accidentally deleted. Apologies to the signer)
I agree with W.H.H. in love eternal. fantastic is the reality no matter how bleak.
hodgson touches the place others can't reach
I have been a fan of The Night Land for many years, having read the novel several times. I first came upon the excerpted version The Dream Of X, written by Hodgson, and subsequently had to read the entire tale. I also read many of his other novels and shorts as well, at least those which were available, such as The House On The Borderland, etc. Thanks for setting up this website!
H. P. Lovecraft is truely a great inspiration for many writers even today!
hello. . . ainsi lorsque ce n'est pas fois un beau côté je ne sais pas non plus! ;-) maintenant fois sérieusement, elle a vraiment très bien réussi! encore beaucoup souhaite un succès et un amusement. . . .
bye messy . . . .
I first read the Night Land over 30 years ago and it has haunted me to this dayas has that other WHH masterpiece, The House on the Borderland. I have never read anything like them, before or since. Wonderful stuff!
Very interesting site I enjoyed my stay. Stop by and say hello at my url, I'll be waiting for you in the dark.
Hi! Just located your site recently and am finding it very interesting. As I told you in a recent e-mail, I have several original Arkham House tomes by Hodgson and an anthology of shorts titled "Out of the Storm" which is illustrated. Looking forward to joining your forum. Thank you.

Very interesting site. Hogdson is one of my favorite authors.
Very impressive
I read the Nightland volume 1 when i was about 15. I'm now 42. I remember especially walking past the silent house. The books were probably a bit above me at the time though i read and enjoyed other Ballantine Adult Fantasy books like The Worm Ouroboros, A Voyage to Arcturus and The Last Unicorn. Browsing your site has inspired me to take it of the bookshelf again and this time read volume 2 as well! Thanks!
This is amazing, and obviously a true labor of love. You've done a man's work here, sir!
A very good website for one of the most fascinating works of W.H.Hodgson. Hi from Genoa, Italy
Neat site, and hello from Milford, CT
I liked the style of Brett Davidson and enjoyed the story "Little Watcher". I am reading TNL for the third time, and feel "re-immersed". The Watchers are worth investigating, and I like Davidson's idea of their writing in physical form on the walls of the Redoubt. I had an idea for a film with an uncharacteristically positive outcome, (to re-light the Land) but I am not a writer, just a dreamer...
Thanks belav. All information gratefully received
hy there: just a word to let u know, that your page is great, truly WHH was one of the best fantasy writters of all times, I´ll look to get some sacns and info of his works, translated to the spanish language(I´m from Uruguay), the spanish edit of the night land is ilustrated bi Virgil Finlay, and it´s a hell of a book keep up the good job see you, space cowboy belav
Hallo ! This is really great nice Work! Go on giving us that kind of inspiration! yours unicorn
Sir, you may check out the section on this site http://home.clara.net/andywrobertson/nightletters.html
i would like to know what a giant city is and how does it differ from a mega city if it difers at all.please give me a clear distinction of the two if there is one.
Does anyone have significant source for biographic detail on the MAN William Hope Hodgson?? What influenced him to write wierd books? I have read every word of THE NIGHTLAND twice, once at age 22 and now at age 70. Reply to me at rdwood321@aol.com. Posted 4 April 03
I am facinated with ths drawings and storys on this website they are great and it would be excellent to see thoseincomplete drawings finished so people can get a good look at what your trying to draw.
Curses!!!!
Alas! While you were paying $54 Danegelt for a year's supply of Earth Current, Array and I, unaware of your generous provision, each made a donation. Look! Thank you, respected Sir! The evil invaders have now been banished to the Outer Darkness.
Help! The Night Land forum has been invaded by advertisements! I have made a small contribution of $14 towards the cost of bannishing these pneumavorous irritants, but I gather that this won't even show up on the site's running total for three days. In the mean time, you've actually got $34 towards the next year's subscription, Master Monstruwacan, not $20. Don't let them trick you - or anyone else - into paying more than you need to to bring the total up to the required $54! Anonymous.
I like your site, you did a good job!
Thank you! Unfortunately I can't change the forum settings, but I will be pleased to host any pictures you want to send us. An illustrated or animated version of THE NIGHT LAND is a dream many of us share. Let our motto be "We won't rest until there is a cartoon Disney version". See you in the forums.
Part 4 Hodgson's work. I've never met anybody else in person who's read the book, so finding some kindred spirits is great. I'd like to suggest some facility for attaching pictures to this guest book link, I would have attached my photo or a sketch if it were possible. Hope to talk soon, Ray
Part 3 then drop me a line. Meanwhile this site is being added to my favorite links and I'll check in regularly. Hopefully I'll get to know everyone a bit better. Congratulations on the website. The information and photos from his life were really appreciated. Although I don't have a personal website, I'm happy to swap artwork, ideas and talk via email or Instant Messaging. It's great to see so many guys and girls who appreciate
Part 2 (I just discovered I can only type 500 characters - so this is going to be a couple more entries) The Night Land is my favorite book, not just by Hodgson, but of anyone's. And it's one of the 3 creative goals of my life to do an illustrated version of it. I've done various rough sketches of some characters and elements from the book, but nothing serious yet. If anybody is interested in helping with such a long-term project (years I'm afraid)
Hi, I'm a big fan of Hodgson's work, like all of you no doubt. But strangely I've never stumbled on this site despite years of web surfing on and off for Hodgson-related info. I'm currently an Art Director for a video game company in Germany, and prior to this worked for five years at Sony Family Entertainment in Los Angeles as a Production Designer on kid's cartoons. But don't let this fool you - I have no contacts in the film or entertainment industry :-)
Good Luck With Your Site!
Welcome, respected sir!
Just happened across this site! Marvellous! I have been a big Hodgson fan for a few eons...glad to see there are others out there. I might just have to write a story for your site...
Thank you, Nigel. I shall add this in the the "In His Owm Words" page.
Discovered while idly searching and running down broken links: WHH's Honour Register entry at the Commonwealth War Graves commission: http://www.cwgc.org.uk/detailed.asp?casualty=836846
I will place it there, Sir. In the forum, I mean.
Tried to submit a short note about Hodgson and Tolkien to the forum, but the forum's server was offline. I tried to submit it here, but it was too long. Rats! I'll e-mail it the Master Monstruwacan and he can place it where appropriate... (The WPB?) Nigel Price Minety Wiltshire
Dreamworks would indeed make a good fist of it. I think it's more likely to make it to screen as a mini-series -- al la Dune. It'd be a good idea to keep the people "responsible" for Gormenghast away from it, mind you.
Dreamworks might do it very well
William Hope Hodgson is possibly one of the most neglected authors of the 20th century. In this age of fantastical Computer graphics I can only dream of what Hollywood might do with one of his epic tales. What a dream come true it would be to see "The Nightland" brought to the big screen. Boyce Sans In Eyes@aol.com
Thank you, respected ladies
Great site!
Hello! I am a Swedish artist and among many things, a great lover of strange stories. Some years ago I read a story in an anthology called Stora Monsterboken (Big Book of Beasts), it was The Nightland, translated to swedish. I found the story very beautiful and strange and I never forgot it. So today I got this idea to search for it on the net, and I found it! Thanks a lot! I also think that Your site is very interesting and beautiful, easy to navigate, fast and with nice colors.
test
Alas, madame: the biography by Joshi, Gafford and Sawyer lists no such translation.Hodgson really freakes me out, therefor he is the best!
A sound sentiment. ;-}>
Thank you for a very good page! I was happy to find a place with so much William Hope Hodgson stuff, especially since I write a big essay about him for the moment. I read "The House On The Borderland" and I love it! I reasently got "The Night Land", but I haven't read the whole book yet because I find the language very complicated, (English is not my first language) If anyone knows how to get the Swedish version, I am interessted! Hodgson really freakes me out, therefor he is the best!
Thank you, Rick. I have copied this information to our new ezeboard forum.
Update on the 'Carnacki' book out of Ash Tree: probable publishing date is June; will contain twelve stories, six previously published in original 1992 Carnacki booklet and small press zines, six new to the book, including a 24,000 word novella. Paul Lowe (my fave illustrator) will be doing the cover. Love your site. Keep up the good work. Rick Kennett
Your servant, madame!
I first became aware of WHH's work withe the 70's revival of Weird Tales and the Story "Eloi,Eloi,Lama Sabachtani". I started hunting other works by Hodgson. Thru the years I lost most of my collection but have been able to replace most of Hodgson's works except the story that got me started. Now thanks to your sight I have the story in my collection again.
Just a quick note to say how i enjoyed your web site, and thank you for including my art work . Sincerely Bob LoGrippo
Wow, great site! My first reading of the Night Land was an old french edition, I'm glad to see that Hodgson's work is still alive. Thanks for your great job, Dan
I read this book in prison in 1983. The page showing copyright details etc. was missing and it was only later I found out it was written so long ago and was astounded!
Hmmm. Thanks! Yeah, pinlighter is me . . .The science in Night Land stories cannot be "gaslight". I should be the hardest highest SF you can write. Those Things in the Land are real.
I've just read Andy's Night Land story in Interzone and been impressed. It's open to minor criticism in the areas like narrative drive and length, but Andy has succeeded in fusing Hodgson's vision with science and evoking a credible Redoubt culture. This is The Night Land as cyberpunk; the Redoubt plus nanotech. It sets the standard (a high standard) for any of us trying to write in this milieu, as well as giving some very useful pointers re approach. Neville Barnes
Beautiful Night Land site. I read it last year on a Rocket Ebook, having converted it from an HTML version at Carnegie Mellon. It is both an incredibly powerful book and an amazingly poorly written one. What was on Hodgson's mind?
This is BRILLIANT!!!....I`ve read the book over and over!...I was fascinated by Hodgesons vision...He wrote so many good stories! I was particularly fond of his Carnaki series...To find a site as well presented as this which deals with such an obscure and some would say, childishly written book, is an absolute pleasure! Keep it up! Del
Great stuff, Andy!! The Nightland is one of the great classics of imaginative literature and your project sounds terrific.
As rightly stated, my name, and that other the other Nigels round here, does derive ultimately from the Icelandic "Njal's Saga". The saga is a terrific read, and highly recommended (get the Penguin edition).
So Nigels are Neils?
Most scholars seemed agreed these days that the name Nigel, like the name Neil, derives ultimately from the Icelandic "Njal", meaning "champion", as in "The Saga of Burnt Njal". But for many years, the name was thought to derive from the Latin word "niger", meaning "black". Black as night, I suppose...
That makes three Nigels round here. What is it about Nigels and The Night Land, pray?
Thought I'd check this site out prior to answering your recent contribution to the Urth list, Andy. Love Hodgson, but yes, "The Night Land" is a deeply flawed book. Nigel Price Minety, Wiltshire, UK
Mr Owston kindly made the text of his play available to us for free - though in fact I donated something to his church funds. The spirit of Chrisian eschatology is of course completely at variance with that of The Night Land - where there is no God, no Patron, and no Salvation.
I admire Mr Owston's cheek in reversing this: but "The Lazarus Man" was written for his own purposes and is not to be judged on the same spectrum as other Night Land fictions.
Re:The Lazarus Man. Understand that this was written to be preformed in a church before a Christian audience. It also was written according to an Amillennial interpretation of the Revelation of St. John. Hence the ending. To average Sci-fi readers, this is certainly not "cutting edge," but if you've seen many religious plays,it will certainly be different than most.
Sorry. I read the 'Lazarus Man' couldn't you really come up with anything other than a 'Deus ex machina' ending. I love the Night Land site though.
What a pleasure to come upon such a beautifully crafted website!
Mr. Robertson: Some really, really amazing work here. I am glad to have been told of this, and doubly glad you've gotten published in INTERZONE. I sent you a long (frankly silly) letter of belated congratulations through the DGML. Which, fortunately, was eaten as it was sent, by a "You have performed an illegal..."(etc.) error reading. At any rate, great site, many thought-provoking things in your essays, stuff I'd love to bug you about, provided either of us had had more time. xJAYx
Hi. Just looking. I'll be making comments on pneumavores etc later. Neville
Great tastes ,great design ,great site ... at least ,there's something new under the sun .
NIGHT LAND RPG? Yes, that is part of the Great Plan, coming a little after the Cartoon Disney Musical Version and just before the Cuddly Stuffed Watcher beany babies.
Excellent site. I read The House On The Borderland a few years ago after Terry Pratchett mentioned it as the inspiration for his Discworld 'Dungeon Dimensions'. Reading The Night Land online was... an experience. Unlike many other people I didn't find the 17th century language forms offputting, it gave a suitably eerie dreamlike/allegory quality reminiscent of The Pilgrims Progress.I'd like to see a Night Land RPG.
Haay! Another Fairport Convention Fan!!!! And one who has played at Cropredy! Recalls my own finger-in-me-ears days!! Sir, you are welcome here!!! I'll be buying "Traveller in Shadow"!! Meanwhile do post me a link to the text of your play, if you can.
Currently I am working on "The Lazarus Man" an allegorical/religious play to be performed at Bryn Mawr Church of Christ, White Oak, PA.USA on Mar. 23-24, 2002. The background is "loosely" based on the scenario of the Night Land. I've been a Hodgson fan since I read "The House On the Borderland" in 1964. I've decribed "the Lazarus Man" as The Road Warrior meets The Book of Revelation.
Hello from the Wizard.
Have traveled H's misty paths for several decades. BB
Thank you! We all agree that The Night Land is hard to read: but the ideas, the concepts . . .Your home page is an RPG scenario that obviously shares the Night Land vibe. May I point out that THE NIGHT LAND (TM) RPG still remains to be written???? Might make your fortune . . . :-)
This is a really nice initiative. I read "The house at the borderland" when i was a teenager and i was really fascinated by Hodgsons bizzare worlds. When i heard about "Nightland" i went hunting for the story. Finally i found a swedish translation (though in abbreviated form...). Sad enough i was not really satisfied with the story, but the world of the Nightland has haunted me ever since. English is not my native language but perhaps i might give it a try anyway and submit you a story.
http://www.galeon.com/literarias/Thank you Serafin
Have you checked the Quintadimnension site www.quintadimension.com for translations?
Hello. I discovered Hogdson reading the celebrated essay by Lovecraft "Supernatural horror in literature" and I tried to find the Hogdson books (the novels and the tales). I am from Barcelona, Spain and I would prefer translations. Anyway, translated or not, the english author has seemed terrific to me. As to your website, I must confess that it really seemed to me a very good one! a very atractive design and interesting containings...congratulations Serafin
Thank you, I will!!

What a discovery! I've loved THE NIGHT LAND ever since I bought the Ballantine edition in the mid-70s and it's great to find a decent site dedicated to it. The concept of being paid to write fan fiction is an interesting one. Hmmm - I'll have to see ...
Keep up the good work guys. The word is spreading ...
